To paraphrase 18th-century writer Jean Anthelme Brillat Savin, “Tell me what you read, and I shall tell you what you are.” The original quote concerned food, but it applies equally to your reading habits, both online and off. Today you should be able to tell a little bit more about me than you knew before as I reveal what I read and how I find it both online and off.
As far as real-world book reading, I am a used bookstore fan, not only because I’m cheap (which I am), but also because of the hunt. I never know what I’ll find. Online, I am an info junkie. I used to be a big into RSS (subscribing to more than 500 and with30,000 unread items), but I have settled into a routine where I visit a few websites regularly. I use social media to fill in the rest.
+ On a recent trip to a used book store the pickings were slim. I had some decent books to exchange but all I could was Voltaire’s Bastards by John Ralston Saul. I’ve only just started it but as someone who took a couple of philosophy courses in college it is entertaining me so far. [John Ralston Saul]
+ If you want to know what I was really into about a year ago you should check out my Google Reader. I think RSS has value, as a framework it makes a lot of things happen on the web but I’ve definitely fallen out of practice as far as checking it. Here you can find my shared items. [Google Reader]
+ While my Delicious use has slowed down of late I still use the social bookmarking service when I find something that I can’t read just at that moment. I am loathe to use regular bookmarks unless it’s something I go to every day. [My Delicious Bookmarks]
+ Hockey is one of my vices. I know I should care a lot less about a game where 23 men slide around a piece of frozen rubber but I can’t help myself, I’m Canadian. My poison is the Calgary Flames. Matchsticks and Gasoline reliably brings solid analysis and enough funny soundbites on my team to keep me interested. [Matchsticks and Gasoline]
+ I am a big sustainable and renewable energy wonk and as such you’ll find me at Greentech Media quite frequently. [Greentech Media]
+ Twitter is a tremendous resource. I have made contacts, gone to events and discovered new ideas through the microblogging service. Follow me to get an idea of what I’m doing and reading. Note: I won’t be back until December 23. [@DuncanKinney]
