Unlimited Print Publication Suspended, Website Continues

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
by Rachel Singh

Dear Unlimited Readers & Visitors,

The UL team wanted to share directly some breaking news from a release just out:

Venture Publishing is suspending the print publication of Unlimited magazine and moving operations online only, effective with its May/June 2009 issue.

Says president and publisher Ruth Kelly, “We remain confident in the vision for Unlimited magazine and proud of its execution. Unfortunately with the current economic reality, Unlimited has not had time to find its feet with print advertisers. In contrast the website continues to grow in visitorship and revenue generation. Consequently, we are going to focus on growing and enhancing Unlimited at unlimitedmagazine.com at this time, and will plan to re-launch the print version within 12 to 24 months, when the market has stabilized.

“In the meantime, we will put our energy and resources towards building our newest acquisition Alberta Oil magazine and continuing to make Alberta Venture the province’s best-read business magazine. These Alberta-focused magazines remain strong in print and online. Our contract division also continues to grow, adding two new publications to its portfolio in the month of March.”

Craille Maguire Gillies will function in the role of editor for unlimitedmagazine.com.

Kent Bruyneel and Malcolm Brown have been released from their full-time positions with Unlimited. Brown will continue with Venture Publishing as a design consultant through April on other print and web projects.

Canadian magazine remaps the world: “the U.S. is now an island”

Edmonton, Alberta (March 3, 2009) – Unlimited, Canada’s next-gen business magazine, is using the cover of its upcoming March/April issue to reflect on the changing shape of the sociopolitical map and issue a challenge to the newly inaugurated U.S. administration. The cover features a map of the world with the United States as a shrunken island adrift between Mexico and Canada. Targeted to young entrepreneurs and up-and-coming professionals, Unlimited has established a reputation as a thought-provoking magazine by publishing inspiring and challenging content that pushes the boundaries of traditional business magazines.Displaying “Brave the New World” as its headline, the latest issue of the magazine retraces the world’s boundaries and reinterprets the relationships between various countries and regions.Editor Kent Bruyneel explains, “We do not believe our map anticipates the dislodging of America from the rest of the world, we believe it reflects what has already happened. As we enter the new economic realties of the world, the transit lines on our map are also reminders that if a country along the lines should fall into crisis, or disrepair, then that affects all the other countries on the line. For the world to become a better place, it’s imperative that President Obama and the new administration reconnect their country.”Based in Alberta, Unlimited is a Canada-wide business magazine for 20-35 year old entrepreneurs and professionals. Having won a National Magazine Award for Best Art Direction and a Western Magazine Award for Best New Magazine in its first year of publication, Unlimited continues to provide readers with compelling content and stunning design and photography. The March/April issue is available next week on newsstands across Canada and full articles can be found online at unlimitedmagazine.com. A video featuring Editor Kent Bruyneel and Associate Art Director Natalie Olsen further explaining the thought process behind making the cover map can be found hereFor further information, or to request copies of the magazine, please contact:craille@unlimitedmagazine.com or 1-866-227-4276, ext. 248 (NB: For a more detailed explanation of the cover map, see here.)
