Unmanned Mission
My interest in a device to find IEDs is personal. My grandson will be deploying to Afghanistan in the next year or two, and I want to see him kept safe. This unwinnable war has taken too many lives already. I feel Canadian universities should be pulling out all the stops to solve this problem. If a device to “defang” the IED was developed I am sure it would make the war there more winnable by removing the most effective weapon the enemy has.

Good Will Funding
Way to go Unlimited for bringing this important message to the world. By the way, I coined the terms “philanthro-capitalist” and “philanthro-capitalism,” so it tickled me to see these terms in your magazine.

I also love your magazine and what a great name. I hope you continue to showcase these social entrepreneurs including small organizations like Humanity Unites Brilliance.

Job Machine
I run workshops for internationally trained professionals on job search strategies. The statement which comes up most often is: I’m not finding work in my profession because I don’t have Canadian work experience, yet I can’t get my foot in the door because I’m overqualified for entry level jobs. How would you answer this question?

Hi Lidia,
A good avenue is to target companies who recruit foreign trained workers. In Unlimited's feature on Alberta's Best Workplaces 2009, the global firm KPMG won top spot as the Best Workplace for New Canadians. (Honourable mentions were Deloitte & Touche, Upside Software and Nexen.) Other big firms also offer a lot of support for new immigrants and, depending on the field (i.e. nursing) will go out into the field to recruit them. Also, the Government of Canada’s Foreign Credentials Referral Office has just produced a handbook to help new immigrants put their training to work.
